pep talk

pep talk

i painted green chalkboards around my house
the one in my front room
my son wrote fart on it
with a giant capital f
after i wrote some other bathroom humor on it
on them
i want to write reminders
pep talks
notes to the family
on one of them in my room i wrote
just write this ethno essay and then write what you like
it was a pep talk
cause i hated this ethno essay
i love this ethno essay
and i hate this ethno essay

ethnomusicology
ethno for short
and if you wanna disrespect it

i took two of my three boys with me to the grocery store today after school
when they get old enough to stay home alone
i'm the only adult in my home
it gets easier to do the shopping alone
so i took two of them with me today when i usually take none
they're thirteen and nine
did the "let's communicate well in the store" pep talk in the car
no wrestling in the store
please do not ask me for a lot of things
we are getting mainly produce

then in the store
i can ask them to get things
and realize i still need to teach them how to pick out produce properly
they help me
we like each other
it's cool

i want to bake
but i don't want to eat wheat as often as i want to bake
so i want to bake
healthier things
ima granola motherfucker
you can make paste out of dates and papaya and pear and other shit
it's fuckin great
oats millet amaranth quinoa
so so right

i got this shirt

it is a list of the names of the houses featured in the film Paris is Burning
this is a good history to know about
it is also a good film
the houses are groups of vogue dancers and dancers who would perform at Black drag queen balls in 1980s New York City and surrounding boroughs
Willi Ninja was the main man
and he was a beautiful dancer
i saw this film when i was seventeen
via dancer, Doug Elkins, who introduced me to so much dance that i didn't know about
i got this shirt from Philadelphia Printworks
i wore it to work today
where i see a lot of people
i got asked about it a lot today

before buying it
i wondered if it was appropriation
me, a white woman, wearing this shirt
with the names of Black and Brown gay and queer men
prominently displayed
as an example of Black gay club and dance culture
and then i decided that even though it might be appropriation
i’m still going to wear it
because it is my opportunity
to educate people about something important

and it is my opportunity to be publicly serious
about African American culture
and about dance club culture
and about queer culture

and if i wanna be an asshole, i can be like, what's the matter with you, motherfucker, how come you don't know about this shit?

my kitchen is full of produce
the fridge is bright and organized
we ate it pretty bare prior
i like to stack produce on the table
right now it's oranges and orange tomatoes
and a pineapple
sometimes we make tomato pyramids
i'm going to make the best juice tomorrow
the fridge is pretty green
cucumbers

i wrote this piece just so i could post this clip at the end

i don't know what to write

i don't know what to write
